Ballad of Crows features a musical partnership between singer/songwriter Steve Crawford and guitarist/mandolinist Pete Coutts which has remained steadfast for over 20 years. Forming their first band while still at school and playing together in countless bands in a wealth of styles since, they have developed a deep musical connection enabling them to create an intense and powerful onstage chemistry. The line-up is completed by the German multi-instrumentalist Sascha ‘Salossi’ Loss who contributes a wise instrumental sensitivity to their songs.

Ballad of Crows’ self-titled debut album was successfully funded via a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, the response to which was overwhelming with their target of 3,500 pounds being exceeded well within the three-week deadline and included enthusiastic backers from right across the globe.

Ballad of Crows’ debut album mainly features the songwriting partnership of Steve Crawford and Davy Cattanch, a collaboration that began with the band Catford. Earthy, soulful themes combine with haunting and stimulating imagery to display a songcraft which highlights musical and lyrical depth. Lush, honey-soaked vocal harmonies are a feature of the songs, which on the album utilize various combinations of guitar, fiddle, mandolin, double-bass, banjo, accordion and cello to create a sound reminiscent of traditional folk and old-time, yet infused with a thoroughly modern energy. The collection of original songs is augmented by a bluegrass-tinged version of Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’ and a cover of Tim O Brien’s ‘Brother Wind’.

Ballad of Crows’ self-produced debut album, like the band itself, is very much a Scottish/German collaboration, recorded in the idyllic and inspiring setting of the German village Stranzenbach near Cologne. It includes exceptional guest performances from award winning UK musicians such as whistle player Ali Hutton, fiddler Jonny Hardie and the Cajun accordionist Chris Hall, as well as contributions from Edinburgh cellist Graham Coe and German slide-guitarist Fabio Nettokoven. It was mixed and mastered by the German musician and producer Jürgen Treyz, who also plays with the bands Cara and Litha amongst others.

Since coming together in 2013, Ballad of Crows have played extensively in Germany, Scotland, Holland and Belgium, building a dedicated following at showcases and festivals throughout Europe and performing live on German TV programme NRW live. Live reviews have described Ballad of Crows as
‘an asset to the live circuit’ and recognized that ‘Not only was the many years of experience the musicians possess obvious, but also the pure optimism in each of their original or covered songs – regardless of whether they were poignant or up-tempo’. The band has a busy schedule ahead for 2015 with many European festival dates already confirmed.
